Skills

Organizations need to know what Skills are required, and which of their employees have them, in order to fill certain positions, communicate expectations, and develop people’s capabilities. An important step to utilizing the Advanced Learning module is to build a Skill library. Your Skill library is a set of standardized Skills determined by tasks or procedures that a department performs in contributing to organizational and departmental goals. Once you have defined which Skills are vital to your organization, you can begin creating them. You can then map them to Job Profiles, Users, and various learning items. You can also organize them by assigning them to Categories.

Keeping the goals of the organization, departments, and jobs in mind, a great place to start in the identification of critical Skills is to examine all of the job descriptions, education requirements, regulations, etc. that are common to sets of or specific jobs within a department. Use the job description to create a general guideline in which proper methodology will become a matrix or outline of Skills. Examples of general and job specific Skills may be defined as one of the following:

  • Production of...
  • Operation of...
  • Maintenance of...
  • Ability to...
  • Knowledge of...

When a Skill recurs, all previous completions are disregarded (irrespective of expiration date) and Users are required to complete all Courses and Classes mapped to a Skill in order to re-achieve it. In addition, Multiple Attempts must be enabled to force Users to re-complete the Course in order to re-achieve the Skill. If Multiple Attempts is disabled when the Skill recurs, the User needs to open the Course in order to re-achieve the Skill. If a Course or Class completion expires before the Skill has been achieved, Users are required to re-take the Course or Class to satisfy completion of those Skill items. When an Admin grants a Skill to a User, Courses, Classes, or other items associated with the Skill are not automatically granted. Users can only achieve Skills in the LearnCenters of which they are members.
